Description:

Google Trips is a Travel app which allows users to help them plan their trips by providing information about places to visit (day/night), restaurants/food & drinks attractions, transport, shops/malls, currency, the internet and other important information to make travelers familiar with their destination

Google Trips Features:

  • Allows users to plan and visit places through ‘Things to do’ section which has places by Local Favorites, Historical, Art, Museums, Indoors, Outdoors, Kid Friendly, Farther Away etc. Users can also look at all the places under A-Z places tab
    • Tip – Tap the star button on these places and revisit with ‘Saved places’ section
    • Places can be viewed in two modes – The List Mode and the Map Mode

Google Trips

  • If you want to visit places during the Daytime, a section called ‘Day plans’ can help you with that. Suggested places with their timings, distance, and other details are available here
    • Users can filter places by time of the day – Morning/Afternoon/Full Day with an option to select the day of the week (Mon – Sat)
  • The ‘Food & Drink’ section will help you go out for Eat & Drink and has details about various cuisines – Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Seafood etc. and ‘Top Spots’ can be found here. Top Spots are further categorized by budget, type of food/drinks, timings for user to visit places basis their needs

  • Flight, Hotel, car rental information is automatically synced with your Gmail
  • To know information about Airport, Local Public Transport, Taxi, or about Walking/Biking in the city, there is a section called ‘Getting around’ which includes details about how to move from & to the Airport?, what forms of public transport are available?, what are the local taxi charges and its whereabouts?, parking lots, walking/biking conditions
  • Lastly, but definitely not the least, Google Trips provides information on Hospitals, Emergencies, Shopping Malls, Currency and the Internet with their ‘Need to know’ section

Other Notable Points:

  • Google claims to have Travel guides for more than 200 cities
  • Offline mode – download cities and operate Google Trips without network
  • The interface is user-friendly

What it lacks:

  • Currently, users cannot manually add Travel reservations (flight, hotel etc.)
  • Cannot sort/filter places, events etc on the basis of reviews, distance, money

Final Thoughts:

In an interview, Richard Holden, Vice President of product management, Google said

“WE REALLY NEED TO HELP CONSUMERS WHEN THEY’RE ACTUALLY AT THEIR DESTINATION”

Google Trips competes with likes of TripIt: Travel Organizer, Gogobot and others, and includes features such as real-time sync, offline mode, combines all kinds of information that may be required when we travel that can give these Apps a run for their money!
